Obtaining Blue Card in Italy
REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING THE BLUE CARD
- The applicant must have a job offer or binding work contract in Italy with a minimum duration of one year.
- The applicant must have a higher education degree from a recognized institution (e.g., a bachelor's degree) or have at least
five years of documented professional experience in the relevant field. - The gross annual salary must be at least 1.5 times the average gross annual salary in Italy. The exact amount may vary, so it
is advisable to check the minimum salary required for the updated Blue Card.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
- Application form: fill out the Blue Card application form.
- Employment contract: obtain a copy of the employment contract or job offer.
- Qualification: copies of degree or professional qualification certificates.
- Proof of Professional Experience: if you do not have a higher degree, you must provide documentation of at least five years of work experience in the field.
- Passport: a copy of a valid passport.
- Photo: recent passport photos.
- Health Insurance: proof of health insurance coverage.
SUBMISSION OF THE APPLICATION
An application for a Blue Card must be submitted to the police headquarters (police office) in the province where you intend to
work. In some cases, the employer must submit the application on behalf of the applicant.
EVALUATION OF THE APPLICATION
Italian authorities will evaluate the application and verify that it meets all requirements. This process can take several weeks.
PERMIT ISSUANCE AND DURATION
If the application is approved, you will be notified to pick up the Blue Card at the Questura. The Blue Card will be valid for an
initial period of two years, or for the duration of the employment contract, if less than two years.
RENEWING THE BLUE CARD
The Blue Card can be renewed before it expires, as long as you continue to meet the requirements.
RIGHTS AND MOBILITY
With the Blue Card, you have the right to bring family members with you and access certain social and security benefits. After
a certain period, you may be eligible for a residence card.
IN THE CASE OF AN EU CARD
An EU blue card holder may be granted long-term resident status (and is issued an EC long-term resident permit) if the
specific requirements are met and under the following conditions:
- to have resided legally and continuously for 5 years in the territory of the Union under an EU Blue Card
- to be in possession, in Italy, for at least 2 years, of a residence permit in electronic format, bearing the words EU blue card.
Family members of the foreigner holding an EU blue card and long-term resident status shall be issued a two-year residence
permit for family reasons.
